Character:
白色结晶。易溶于热乙醇、热水和磷酸钠水溶液,几乎不溶于苯、二硫化碳和石油醚。1g溶于约250ml冷水、1000ml氯仿、400ml乙醚、60ml戊醇。半数致死量(大鼠,腹腔)1500mg/kg。

马尿酸在马及其它草食动物的尿中含量很多,在人的尿中也含有少量。从食物摄入的苯甲酸输送到肝脏,在ATP,Mg2+CoA的共同作用下,肽键和甘氨酸结合生成的化合物。这种合成在狗是于肾脏中进行的,其它动物是在肝脏中进行的,从肝脏中提取出来的酶样品在试管中也能进行。分解马尿酸的酶为马尿酸酶(hippuricase)。
