薄荷醇是一种萜,为薄荷和欧薄荷精油中的主要成分,以游离和酯的状态存在。薄荷醇可分为三种光学异构体,即具有左旋光学特性的L-薄荷醇、具有右旋光学特性的d-薄荷醇和不具有光学特性的dl-薄荷醇 ,又称为消旋薄荷醇。而其中清凉度和香气品质最佳的就是纯天然的L-薄荷醇,又称左旋薄荷醇。左旋薄荷醇具有薄荷香气并有清凉的作用,消旋薄荷醇也有清凉作用,其他的异构体无清凉作用。
